Bucs Nab Shaq Barrett in Free Agency, Add Juice to LB Corps – Buccaneers.com

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker corps is suddenly looking a little deeper, and their pass-rush a little more potent.

On Friday, the third day of NFL free agency, the Buccaneers made another important addition to the roster, agreeing to terms on a one-year deal with outside linebacker Shaquil Barrett. Barrett, who spent his first five years with the Denver Broncos, has recorded 14 sacks over the past four seasons in a rotational role. He became an unrestricted free agent when the new league year began on Wednesday.

The addition of Barrett adds to a free agency haul that has also included the signings of linebacker Deone Bucannon, punter Bradley Pinion and wide receiver Breshad Perriman. The linebacker position, in particular, has gotten a needed infusion of talent after the departure of Kwon Alexander and with the team about to adjust to a new defensive scheme under Head Coach Bruce Arians and Defensive Coordinator Todd Bowles. The Buccaneers also want to put more pressure on the passer in 2019 after finishing in the middle of the pack with 38 sacks last fall.

Barrett (6-2, 250) first arrived in Denver as an undrafted free agent out of Colorado State in 2014. He spent most of his rookie season on the Broncos’ practice squad before a late promotion to the active roster. Barrett then made the active roster in 2015 and went on to play in all 48 games over the next three seasons, making 15 starts. Last year, he played in 13 games and contributed 28 tackles, three sacks and seven quarterback hits.

In all, Barrett saw action in 61 games for the Broncos and totaled 134 tackles, 14.0 sacks, 25 tackles for loss, seven passes defensed, six forced fumbles and three fumbles recoveries. Barrett also played in four playoff games for Denver and was a member of the team that won Super Bowl 50.
