A North Carolina doctor playing a pickup hockey game saved another player’s life at a Charlotte, North Carolina, rink.

Emergency room doctor Craig Bryant saw Jib Street collapse on the ice at the Pineville Ice House rink during a game in late January. Bryant told NBC News his first thought was, “This is time to take the hockey helmet off and put the doctor hat on.”

Surveillance footage showed Street collapse after suffering a heart attack. The video then shows Bryant rushing to Street; he performed CPR while others called 911 and got the rink’s defibrillator.

“It was a very close call,” Bryant told NBC. “If bystander CPR wasn’t initiated within the first couple of minutes of him going down, we could have a very different outcome.”

Street is recovering and told NBC he has a defibrillator with a built-in pacemaker.

“When I did see the video a couple of days ago, it is difficult to watch yourself go down and lie motionless on the ice,” Street told a local Fox TV station. “The gratitude comes from how fast this guy (Bryant) responded — that’s the miracle. I’m skating with an emergency room doctor.”

Street and Bryant met after the health scare, and Street repaid Bryant with his autographed Wayne Gretzky jersey and called him his “guardian angel.”

“I’m very blessed to be here,” Street told NBC. “My heart had stopped pumping, and I wasn’t breathing and my organs were shutting down, and I was simply dead.”
